Gary gears up for Arctic Challenge

In March, a team of brave volunteers from Woodside Animal Centre Leicester will trek across the Arctic in order to raise money for our Care 4 paws appeal.

This appeal, which has been endorsed by Engelbert Humperdinck, aims to raise £1million in order to build an onsite veterinary suite which will provide the best care imaginable for the animals at the centre. Without the vet suite in place, Woodside might be faced with the possibility of turning animals in need away.

The manager of Woodside Animal Centre, Gary Wheway, has been training for the Arctic challenge since February last year and has so far lost almost two stone and gained another 28% muscle mass in preparation for the challenge.

When we asked Gary why he decided to do the challenge, he said, “Apart from the fact of doing something really special to mark our 40th anniversary at Scudamore road site, we wanted to show the public just how committed we as staff are to the Care 4 Paws appeal.”

Gary has loved getting back into shape and he has also commented on how he loves the looks of amazement he receives from people who ask about the challenge.

When we asked what Gary is looking forward to, he said, “Just being in touch with nature and the sledging and of course spending time with my team of huskies”. However, he has also said that he is nervous about camping in sub-zero temps, lack of sanitation facilities and the fear of his tent mate snoring!

In order to donate please text ARCTIC to 70500 to give £5 and remember to tweet using the hashtag #care4paws to spread awareness!
