A gruelling challenge to raise money

Animal lover Chris Trinder took part in one of the most gruelling endurance challenges the Outlaw Triathlon, to raise money for Woodside Animal Centre. A firm believer in the ethical treatment of animals and their welfare, Chris first began raising money for the RSPCA a few years ago and has continued to do so ever since.

His latest fundraising venture the Outlaw Triathlon, can take between a staggering 11 to 16 hours to complete. It consists of, a 2.4mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run to finish. He became inspired to take part in the mammoth challenge after watching a friend complete it in 2010, and was astounded by the fact “people were physically able to complete such a challenging endurance race.” In 2013 he decided to sign up for the 2014 race.

Chris began the day at 3:30am, after driving to Nottingham’s Holme Pierrepont, he pumped up his bike tyres and loaded it with drinks and snacks all set for the bike ride later. He then put on his wetsuit ready for the 2.4 mile swim; he left the water over an hour later, feeling as though he had “been in a washing machine”. He proceeded to complete the testing 112 mile bike ride and returned to the centre for the 26.2 mile run. He described the final leg of the race as “running between the aid stations, taking on fluid at each and every station”.

After undertaking a year-long training regime Chris impressively finished the race in less than 12 hours. There were times throughout the Triathlon when he felt his “body was threatening to give-up” but he strived on; knowing that his “efforts were helping sick, neglected and abused animals”

He added, “The Outlaw was a challenge on epic proportions and that really helped the fund-raising process. My only problem now is choosing my next challenge!”
