Is a rabbit the right pet for me?

Rabbits are an adorable addition to anyone’s life and at Woodside Animal Centre we’re here to help you decide if a rabbit is the pet for you.

There are around 1.7 million rabbits being kept as pets in the UK (that’s a lot of hopping!), and any family thinking about getting  a rabbit should make sure they can care for it and give it lthe love and attention it needs.

Rabbits are complex animals that need a lot of care and attention. If done right, they can expect to celebrate between 8 to 12 ‘hoppy’ birthdays, on average.

They’re friendly and social little creatures so it is strongly advised that they live in neutered pairs (they don’t say ‘breed like rabbits’ for nothing!), in a spacious, clean hutch where they can spend both time together and apart. They should also have a suitable size run for exercise if they are not intended to be a house pet.

Rabbits love to play with all sorts of friendly people including children whilst they’re being supervised by a responsible adult (be gentle!)

When they get hungry, they love to nibble on good quality hay & grass, as well as leafy vegetables like cabbage, kale and broccoli, and the occasional carrot or apple as a treat.

Like any other pet, rabbits need regular health checks and vaccinations at your local vets and if you suspect anything is wrong with them they should be seen to straight away.

Following these simple steps can ensure your new rabbit is one happy bunny!

Think you could be the perfect parent for a rabbit? There are lots of small animals at Woodside Animal Centre looking for their special new home. Remember, Woodside Animal Centre in Leicester do not receive any funding so we are greatly appreciative for any donations we receive.
